The growing Village of Oak Lawn is an ideal place to work, raise a family and retire. The Village’s proximity to downtown Chicago, Lake Michigan, O’Hare and Midway Airports, and accessibility to the region’s extensive Elevated Train Network provides Oak Lawn residents with a plethora of recreational, educational, cultural and employment opportunities. Chicago is home to several professional sports teams, an extensive list of famous museums, theatres and performance halls, worldly shopping and fine dining that features an eclectic mix of cuisines.
Sports are king in the Midwest and Chicago has some of the most recognizable teams in their respective sporting leagues. The Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls have fan followings in cities across the country if not the world and all play home games in some of the most unique and tradition-rich stadiums in the country. Most amenities are accessible by rail system and all are within short driving distances.
Still, residents of Oak Lawn need not travel outside village limits to experience many fine amenities as well. Several intriguing historic properties are situated here, including the ever-popular Children’s Museum. Additionally, with over 300 acres of parks, recreational sport facilities and open land, several opportunities to experience the outdoors can be found just outside one’s doorstep. Special events in the village range from free outdoor concerts in the summertime to themed festivals on holidays such as the Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Halloween.
Oak Lawn is a stable, family-friendly, middle class suburb, which developed from a modest farming community originally called Black Oaks Grove. However, its growth was brought about my migrants from the south side of Chicago in the decades following World War II. Today, nearly one third of Oak Lawn is commercial while the majority of this Village is intermixed with retail stores and residential properties in quiet neighborhoods. Oak Lawn has gone through numerous periods of growth, which were strongly influenced by its proximity to Chicago, the convenience of a fine highway network and the excellent community facilities of a mass transit system and a public works project. Additionally, superb healthcare and fine public and private schools are located in Oak Lawn as are churches of all denominations.
